My Big Brother Journey
I became a Big Brother in 2015 because I felt a calling from God to give back. Seeing school shootings and community violence weighed on my heart. Life is short, and young people can feel lonely, overwhelmed and unsure of themselves. I wanted to stand up, lead by example and be someone a young person could lean on.
I don’t have children of my own, but I knew I had time, experience and a willingness to show up. I also recognized parts of myself that had been selfish or entitled. Mentoring became a chance to grow beyond that and put someone else’s needs first.
With Brock and Donovan, I try to be a steady male role model—someone they can talk to about their struggles, insecurities, relationships and everyday life. I want to stand in the discomfort with them so they feel truly seen and heard.
Showing up for the next generation.
I’ve often felt like an underdog myself. This journey has helped me lead with more patience, more heart and more steadiness, and allowed me to wear my heart on my sleeve. What I want my little brothers to know is simple: you have something valuable to offer. You don’t have to hide or shrink your light.
For families considering the program, I’d start by listening to your child. Talk with current Big Brothers, Big Sisters and program staff about the experience, expectations and what is required of everyone.
